Summer Worship Schedule

July 1 – August 12…..10:00 am (Summer Sabbath)

August 19….. 8:20 am, 9:40 am and 11:00 am (school year schedule)

Summer Sabbath has become an integral part of the rhythm of who we are as a congregation. During these weeks, most activities (Sunday School, Sunday evening, Wednesday evening, committee meetings) except for Sunday morning (worship, nursery, children’s church) are dismissed so that our volunteers have an opportunity for rest and to provide more time for friends and family to be together—to enjoy one another, to celebrate God’s creation, to declare that our God is not a taskmaster but a loving Father who rejoices in our work and our play, and to remember that we are not loved by God because we are busy but because God is love.

Sabbath is not a time of prohibition but a time of rejoicing because we belong to God and in Christ we are free. Christian freedom is not so much freedom from but freedom to—freedom to value, freedom to be, freedom to enjoy, freedom to try on. This is why Isaiah can say that for those who truly follow God, the Sabbath is a holy day that brings delight to our parched and needy souls (Isaiah 58:11-14). May God bless you with a restful, spiritual Summer Sabbath. May he renew your spirit, restore your body and refresh your mind for your life with him and for his glory.

Worship is an integral part of our life at Houghton Wesleyan Church!  Each time we come together as God’s people is a celebration, and we emphasize making worship a part of our daily lives both corporately and individually.  We seek to worship God in a variety of styles and genres, including some services that are in a more contemporary style and others that are more traditional.  Whatever your preference, we pray that God is glorified and His people are edified in each of our services together!

Our Contemporary Services are led by a music ministry team, and we are pleased to use a variety of musicians each week, including singers, guitar, bass, drums, and an assortment of other instruments.

In our Traditional Service, our musical worship is led by the organ and the Adult Choir. Our Adult Choir sings each week during the school year, and meets for rehearsal on Tuesdays at 7pm in the sanctuary.  Various members of our church family – including junior high and high school students, college students, and adult community members – play instruments or sing during all three weekly services. If this is a way you would like to get involved, please contact Amanda Cox. Beginning the last Sunday of June and continuing through the second Sunday in August, we practice Summer Sabbath. During these weeks, we intentionally practice a collective Sabbath rest. We cancel committee meetings and other gatherings except Sunday morning worship: one blended worship service at 10:00 a.m. We do offer nursery and children’s church (ages 2-5) ministries during the service.     .
